Forms & Strengths
- 150mg capsules
- 300mg tablets
- 300mg/5mL oral solution
- 450mg/15mL oral solution
Adult Dosing
- Initial dose: 600-900mg/day in 2-3 divided doses
- Usual dose: 900-1200mg/day in 2-3 divided doses
- Maximum dose: 1800mg/day in 2-3 divided doses
Pediatric Dosing
- Children under 12 years: not recommended
- Children 12-18 years: initial dose 600mg/day in 2-3 divided doses
- Children 12-18 years: usual dose 900-1200mg/day in 2-3 divided doses
Indications
- Treatment of bipolar disorder
- Treatment of major depressive disorder
- Severe manic episodes
Mechanism of Action
- Acts as a mood stabilizer
- Inhibits inositol monophosphatase
- Affects neurotransmitter systems
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to lithium
- Severe renal impairment
- Severe cardiac disease
Adverse Reactions
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fine hand tremors
- Polyuria and polydipsia
- Thyroid dysfunction
Drug Interactions
- Increases risk of lithium toxicity with diuretics
- Increases risk of lithium toxicity with NSAIDs
- Decreases lithium levels with theophylline
- Increases risk of neurotoxicity with haloperidol
