Forms & Strengths
- Capsules: 30-40 mg
- Tablets: 20-30 mg
- Soft gelatin capsules: 40-80 mg
Adult Dosing
- For atopic dermatitis: 500-1000 mg/day orally
- For breast pain or tenderness: 1200-1600 mg/day orally
- For premenstrual syndrome: 1000-2000 mg/day orally
Pediatric Dosing
- For atopic dermatitis in children > 6 years: 500 mg/day orally
- For atopic dermatitis in children < 6 years: not established
Indications
- Symptomatic relief of atopic dermatitis
- Relief of mastalgia (breast pain or tenderness)
- Treatment of premenstrual syndrome
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits leukotriene synthesis
- Interferes with prostaglandin synthesis
- Has anti-inflammatory effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to gamolenic acid
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain)
- Headache
- Rash or urticaria (rare)
Drug Interactions
- Increased risk of bleeding with anticoagulants
- Concomitant use with antiplatelet agents: monitor for bleeding
- Interactions with other anti-inflammatory agents: monitor for adverse effects
