- Cream: 1%
- Ointment: 1%
- Suppository: 100mg
- Vaginal tablets: 100mg
Adult Dosing
- Apply topically 1-2 times daily
- Insert vaginally 1 suppository at bedtime for 7-14 days
- Insert vaginally 1 tablet at bedtime for 7-14 days
Pediatric Dosing
- Not recommended for children under 16 years
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients
Indications
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Trichomonal vaginitis
- Amoebiasis
- Giardiasis
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to 30S ribosomal subunit
- Exhibits bactericidal and antiprotozoal activity
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other imidazoles
- First trimester of pregnancy
Adverse Reactions
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea and abdominal pain
- Metallic taste and headache
- Vaginal itching and burning
Drug Interactions
- Alcoholic beverages: may cause disulfiram-like reaction
- Warfarin: may increase anticoagulant effect
- Lithium: may increase lithium levels
- Phenobarbital: may decrease metronidazole levels
