Forms & Strengths
- Suppository: 250mg, 500mg, 1000mg
- Tablet: 250mg
Adult Dosing
- 1 suppository (500mg-1000mg) rectally at bedtime
- 1 tablet (250mg) orally 3 times a day
Pediatric Dosing
- 20-30 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for children over 3 years old
- Not recommended for children under 3 years old
Indications
- Treatment of amoebic dysentery and other intestinal amoebiasis
- Treatment of urogenital trichomoniasis
Mechanism of Action
- Acetarsol acts as an amoebicide, disrupting the cellular metabolism of amoebae
- It also exhibits trichomonicidal activity against Trichomonas vaginalis
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to acetarsol or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy, especially in the first trimester
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Neurological effects: headache, dizziness, polyneuropathy
Drug Interactions
- Concomitant use with disulfiram may enhance toxic effects
- Interference with the efficacy of certain antacids and antibiotics
