Forms & Strengths
- 3 mg drospirenone and 0.02 mg ethinylestradiol tablets
- 3 mg drospirenone and 0.03 mg ethinylestradiol tablets
Adult Dosing
- 1 tablet orally once daily
- 21-day active tablet regimen, followed by 7-day inactive tablet regimen
Pediatric Dosing
- Not recommended for use in patients under 16 years of age
Indications
- Oral contraception
- Premenstrual dysphoric disorder treatment
- Acne treatment in patients 14 years of age and older
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibition of ovulation by suppression of gonadotropin release
- Increased viscosity of cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration
- Thickening of the endometrium to prevent implantation
Contraindications
- Breast cancer or known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia
- Active liver disease or liver tumors
- Undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding
- Thrombophlebitis or history of deep vein thrombosis
- Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
Adverse Reactions
- Headache
- Breast pain
- Mood changes
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Fatigue
- Acne
Drug Interactions
- Anticonvulsants may decrease ethinylestradiol efficacy
- Rifampicin may decrease drospirenone and ethinylestradiol efficacy
- ACE inhibitors may increase potassium levels with drospirenone
- Potassium-sparing diuretics may increase potassium levels with drospirenone
