Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 0.5mg/35mcg, 1mg/35mcg
- Patch: 0.05mg/0.25mg, 0.1mg/0.5mg per 24 hours
Adult Dosing
- Hormone replacement therapy (HRT): 1 tablet or 1 patch per day
- Dosage individualized based on clinical response and patient tolerance
- Therapy should be started with a low dose and adjusted as needed
Pediatric Dosing
- Not indicated for children
- Use in adolescents not recommended
Indications
- Moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms due to menopause
- Moderate to severe symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause
Mechanism of Action
- Estrogen component (estradiol): stimulates estrogen receptors to alleviate symptoms of estrogen deficiency
- Progestin component (norethindrone or levonorgestrel): protects against endometrial hyperplasia
Contraindications
- Known or suspected pregnancy
- Known or suspected breast cancer
- Active deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Severe liver disease
Adverse Reactions
- Headache
- Breast pain or tenderness
- Vaginal discharge or spotting
- Abdominal pain or bloating
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness
Drug Interactions
- Barbiturates: may decrease effectiveness of estrogen component
- Anticonvulsants: may decrease effectiveness of estrogen component
- Rifampin: may decrease effectiveness of estrogen component
- Blood thinners: may increase risk of thromboembolic events
