J01AA03
Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic Ointment: 1%
- Topical Ointment: 3%
Adult Dosing
- Ophthalmic: Apply a small amount (approx 1 cm) to the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 2 to 4 times daily.
- Topical: Apply a small amount to the affected area 1 to 4 times daily.
Pediatric Dosing

Indications
- Treatment of superficial ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of superficial skin infections and minor abrasions caused by susceptible bacteria
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit
- Prevents access of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex, halting peptide chain elongation
- Exerts primarily bacteriostatic activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to chlortetracycline or any tetracycline-class antibiotic
- Viral or fungal diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (for ophthalmic preparations)
- History of hypersensitivity reactions to excipients in the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Transient stinging or burning upon application
- Blurred vision temporarily following ophthalmic administration
- Local hypersensitivity reactions including pruritus, rash, and contact dermatitis
- Superinfection with nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi, with prolonged use
Drug Interactions
- Topical application minimizes systemic absorption and clinically significant drug interactions
- Concurrent use of other topical ocular or cutaneous products in the same area should be separated by at least 10-15 minutes
