Forms & Strengths
- capsules: 250mg, 500mg
- oral suspension: 125mg/5mL, 250mg/5mL
- vials for IM or IV injection: 250mg, 500mg, 1g, 2g
- tablets: 250mg, 500mg
Adult Dosing
- 250-500mg every 6 hours for mild to moderate infections
- 500mg-1g every 6 hours for severe infections
- IV dose: 1-2g every 6 hours
- max dose: 6g per day
Pediatric Dosing
- children over 10 years: 250-500mg every 6 hours
- children under 10 years: 125-250mg every 6 hours
- neonates: 25-50mg/kg per day in divided doses
Indications
- treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria
- osteomyelitis
- septic arthritis
- skin and soft tissue infections
- pneumonia
Mechanism of Action
- inhibits cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins
- bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and other gram-positive bacteria
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to flucloxacillin or other penicillins
- severe hepatic dysfunction
Adverse Reactions
- nausea and vomiting
- diarrhea
- abdominal pain
- rash
- urticaria
- anaphylaxis
- hepatotoxicity
- interstitial nephritis
Drug Interactions
- probencid: increases flucloxacillin levels
- warfarin: increased risk of bleeding
- methotrexate: increased risk of toxicity
- food: decreases oral bioavailability
