Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 250mg/125mg, 500mg/125mg
- Powder for injection: 750mg/125mg, 1.5g/250mg
Adult Dosing
- Community-acquired pneumonia: 500mg/125mg every 12 hours
- Uncomplicated skin infections: 500mg/125mg every 12 hours
- Complicated skin infections: 750mg/125mg every 8 hours
Pediatric Dosing
- Children >3 months: 20-30mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours
- Neonates 0-3 months: 20-30mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours
Indications
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Uncomplicated skin infections
- Complicated skin infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Interferes with transpeptidation reaction
- Beta-lactamase inhibitor protects cefuroxime from degradation
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or other beta-lactam antibiotics
- Severe hypersensitivity to penicillins
Adverse Reactions
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Rash
- Candidiasis
Drug Interactions
- Probenecid increases cefuroxime levels
- Chloramphenicol may inhibit cefuroxime activity
- Aminoglycosides may increase nephrotoxicity risk
