Mechanism of Action
- Third-generation cephalosporin beta-lactam antibiotic
- Binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Bactericidal activity against susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefpodoxime or other cephalosporin-class antibiotics
- History of severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillins or other beta-lactams
Adverse Reactions
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vaginal fungal infections
- Abdominal pain
- Headache
- Rash
- Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea
Drug Interactions
- Antacids and H2-receptor antagonists decrease absorption and peak plasma concentration
- Probenecid decreases renal excretion of cefpodoxime, increasing serum levels
- May enhance nephrotoxic potential of aminoglycosides
- May falsely elevate direct Coombs test results
