Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: 50 mg
- Oral tablets: 100 mg
- Fine granules for oral suspension: 10% (100 mg/g)
Adult Dosing
- Standard oral dose: 100 mg to 150 mg three times daily
- Complicated infections or severe cases: up to 200 mg three times daily
- Administer after meals to improve gastrointestinal tolerance
Pediatric Dosing
- Children oral dose: 3 mg/kg to 6 mg/kg per dose administered three times daily
- Maximum daily pediatric dose should not exceed standard adult limits adjusted for weight
- Safety and efficacy in neonates and premature infants not fully established
Indications
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
- Acute bronchitis and pneumonia
- Otitis media and sinusitis
- Urinary tract infections caused by susceptible organisms
Mechanism of Action
- Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic acting as a bactericidal agent
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)
- Displays broad-spectrum activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic bacteria
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefteram or other cephalosporin-class antibiotics
- History of immediate or severe hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillins or other beta-lactams
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal: diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, abdominal pain
- Hypersensitivity: rash, urticaria, pruritus
- Hepatic: transient elevations in AST, ALT, and ALP
- Hematological: transient eosinophilia, rare leukopenia
Drug Interactions
- Probenecid decreases renal tubular secretion of cephalosporins, leading to increased and prolonged blood concentrations
- Antacids and H2-receptor antagonists may alter oral absorption kinetics if co-administered simultaneously
- May enhance the anticoagulant effect of vitamin K antagonists (warfarin) by altering gut flora synthesis of vitamin K
