Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 500mg
- Suspension: 250mg/5mL
Adult Dosing
- UTI: 500mg-1g every 6 hours
- Respiratory infections: 1-2g every 6-8 hours
Pediatric Dosing
- Children over 12 years: 250-500mg every 6 hours
- Children 6-12 years: 125-250mg every 6 hours
Indications
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Respiratory tract infections
- Meningitis
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits folic acid synthesis
- Interferes with bacterial DNA synthesis
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
- Severe liver or kidney impairment
- Porphyria
Adverse Reactions
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Rash and urticaria
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome
- Agranulocytosis
Drug Interactions
- Warfarin: increased anticoagulant effect
- Methenamine: decreased sulfonamide efficacy
- Cyclosporine: increased nephrotoxicity risk
