Forms & Strengths
- 250mg, 500mg capsules
- 250mg, 500mg tablets
Adult Dosing
- 250-500mg every 6 hours
- 1-2g daily in divided doses
Pediatric Dosing
- 10-20mg/kg/day in divided doses
- 12.5-25mg/kg every 6 hours
Indications
- Respiratory tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Genitourinary tract infections
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to 50S ribosomal subunit
- Bacteriostatic at low concentrations, bactericidal at high concentrations
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to macrolide antibiotics
- Concomitant use with certain statins
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Allergic reactions
- Hepatotoxicity
- Cardiac arrhythmias
Drug Interactions
- Decreased efficacy with antacids
- Increased levels with statins
- Increased risk of QT prolongation with class IA and III antiarrhythmics
