Forms & Strengths
- injectable solution 50mg/mL
- injectable powder for reconstitution
Adult Dosing
- 500mg to 1g IM or IV q8h
- dosage may be adjusted based on renal function
Pediatric Dosing
- 20mg/kg/day IM or IV in divided doses q8h
- neonates and infants require adjusted dosing
Indications
- infections caused by gram-negative bacteria
- septicemia
- pneumonia
- urinary tract infections
Mechanism of Action
- inhibits protein synthesis by binding to 30S ribosomal subunit
- bactericidal activity against gram-negative bacteria
Contraindications
- known hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides
- myasthenia gravis
- parkinsonism
Adverse Reactions
- ototoxicity
- nephrotoxicity
- neuromuscular blockade
- rash and other allergic reactions
Drug Interactions
- increased risk of nephrotoxicity with cephalosporins
- increased risk of ototoxicity with loop diuretics
- reduced absorption with antacids
