Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 150mg, 200mg, 400mg
- Oral suspension: 50mg/5mL, 100mg/5mL
Adult Dosing
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 400mg once daily for 5-7 days
- Community-acquired pneumonia: 400mg once daily for 7-14 days
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections: 200mg once daily for 3-5 days
- Complicated urinary tract infections: 400mg once daily for 7-14 days
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in children under 12 years
- For children over 12 years, dosing is the same as for adults
Indications
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV
- Interferes with bacterial DNA replication and transcription
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to rufloxacin or other quinolones
- Concomitant use with theophylline or other xanthines
Adverse Reactions
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea and abdominal pain
- Headache and dizziness
- Photosensitivity and skin rash
- QT interval prolongation
Drug Interactions
- Theophylline: increased theophylline levels
- Warfarin: increased INR and bleeding risk
- Antacids: decreased rufloxacin absorption
- Sucralfate: decreased rufloxacin absorption
