levofloxacin and ornidazole

Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: levofloxacin 250mg + ornidazole 500mg
- Tablets: levofloxacin 500mg + ornidazole 500mg
Adult Dosing
- Urinary tract infections: 1 tablet (250mg/500mg) every 24 hours for 3-5 days
- Abdominal infections: 1 tablet (500mg/500mg) every 24 hours for 5-14 days
- Skin and soft tissue infections: 1 tablet (500mg/500mg) every 24 hours for 7-14 days
Pediatric Dosing
- Not recommended for children below 18 years due to lack of data
- Use with caution in children above 18 years, dose as per adult dosing
Indications
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
Mechanism of Action
- Levofloxacin: inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV
- Ornidazole: disrupts bacterial DNA synthesis, interfering with nucleic acid synthesis
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, ornidazole or any quinolone/ nitroimidazole
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Children below 18 years
Adverse Reactions
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Headache, dizziness
- Abdominal pain, hepatic dysfunction
- Allergic reactions, rash, pruritus
Drug Interactions
- Theophylline: increased risk of theophylline toxicity
- Warfarin: increased risk of bleeding
- Cyclosporine: increased risk of nephrotoxicity
- Multivalent cations: reduced absorption of levofloxacin
