ciprofloxacin and tinidazole

Forms & Strengths
- Ciprofloxacin 500mg and Tinidazole 600mg tablets
- Ciprofloxacin 250mg and Tinidazole 300mg tablets
Adult Dosing
- 1 tablet (500mg/600mg) orally twice daily for 5-7 days for bacterial vaginosis
- 1 tablet (500mg/600mg) orally twice daily for 7 days for pelvic inflammatory disease
- 1 tablet (250mg/300mg) orally twice daily for 5-7 days for mild to moderate infections
Pediatric Dosing
- Not recommended for use in children under 12 years
- Caution advised in adolescents (12-17 years) due to potential musculoskeletal effects
Indications
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Infections of the gastrointestinal tract
- Infections of the genitourinary tract
Mechanism of Action
- Ciprofloxacin: inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, interfering with DNA replication
- Tinidazole: interferes with bacterial DNA synthesis by damaging DNA, ultimately leading to cell death
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, tinidazole, or other quinolones and imidazoles
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding, due to potential harm to the fetus or baby
Adverse Reactions
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea and abdominal pain
- Dizziness and headache
- Potential for tendonitis and tendon rupture, especially in older patients
Drug Interactions
- Concomitant use with antacids or sucralfate may reduce ciprofloxacin absorption
- Increased risk of QT interval prolongation with concomitant use of Class IA or III anti-arrhythmics
- Potential interaction with warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding
