Forms & Strengths
- Mandelic acid is available as a powder for injection
- Typical concentration is 0.5% or 5mg/mL
- Also available in topical formulations
Adult Dosing
- Typical urinary tract infection dose is 1g every 6 hours
- Maximum daily dose is 4g
- Dosage may vary based on the severity of the infection and renal function
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established
- Not recommended for use in pediatric patients
Indications
- Treatment of urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria
- Used as an antibacterial agent
Mechanism of Action
- Works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Interferes with the formation of the bacterial cell wall
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mandelic acid
- Severe renal impairment
Adverse Reactions

Drug Interactions
- May interact with sulfa drugs and increase the risk of nephrotoxicity
