Forms & Strengths
- Delayed-release granules: 4 g per packet
Adult Dosing
- 4 g orally 3 times daily
- Administer with meals to improve gastrointestinal tolerability
- Total daily dose: 12 g
Pediatric Dosing
- 150 to 200 mg/kg/day orally divided in 2 to 3 doses
- Maximum daily dose: 12 g
Indications
- Treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis in conjunction with other antituberculous agents
Mechanism of Action
- Bacteriostatic agent active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- Inhibits folic acid synthesis by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to aminosalicylic acid or its components
- Severe renal impairment
- Patients requiring a sodium-restricted diet (due to sodium content)
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal upset: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Hypersensitivity reactions including fever, skin rash, and hepatitis
- Hypothyroidism and goiter with prolonged use
- Hematologic abnormalities including hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia
- Malabsorption syndrome
Drug Interactions
- Decreases absorption of vitamin B12
- May reduce serum concentrations of digoxin
- Increased risk of crystalluria with acidic medications
- Increased risk of gastrointestinal irritation when used with other ulcerogenic drugs
