Adult Dosing
- Apply a 1 cm strip of gel to the affected skin area 3 to 5 times daily at the earliest sign of herpes labialis symptoms (tingling, itching).
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 12 years have not been well established; use with caution.
Indications
- Early treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores).
Mechanism of Action
- Synthetic adamantane derivative with antiviral properties; inhibits viral penetration into host cells and prevents cell fusion.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tromantadine or any component of the formulation
- Application to open wounds, mucous membranes, or weeping skin lesions
Adverse Reactions
- Contact dermatitis
- Erythema
- Pruritus
- Burning sensation at the application site
Drug Interactions
- No clinically significant systemic drug interactions reported due to minimal percutaneous absorption
- Avoid concurrent application of other topical agents on the same skin area to prevent altered absorption or increased irritation
