Forms & Strengths
- Injectable solution/powder: meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (groups A, C, Y, W-135 combined or specific monovalent A/C)
- Single-dose and multidose vials with diluent
Adult Dosing
- 0.5 mL subcutaneously as a single dose
- Re-vaccination may be indicated every 3-5 years for individuals at continued high risk
Pediatric Dosing
- Children aged 2 years and older: 0.5 mL subcutaneously as a single dose
- Not routinely recommended for children under 2 years due to poor T-independent antibody response
Indications
- Prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by specific Neisseria meningitidis serogroups
- Immunization for travelers to endemic areas, military recruits, and outbreak control
Mechanism of Action
- Induces production of bactericidal antibodies against group-specific meningococcal capsular polysaccharides
- Stimulates T-cell independent B-cell activation to confer serogroup-specific protection
Contraindications
- History of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to any component of the vaccine or diphtheria toxoid carrier
- Moderate to severe acute illness with or without fever (defer vaccination until recovery)
Adverse Reactions
- Injection site reactions: pain, redness, induration
- Systemic effects: transient fever, headache, malaise, fatigue
Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressive therapies may reduce the immune response to the vaccine
- Can be administered concomitantly with other standard vaccines at separate injection sites
