meningococcus A, purified polysaccharides antigen conjugated
J07AH10
Forms & Strengths
- Injectable suspension: 5 mcg meningococcal A polysaccharide conjugated to diphtheria CRM197 protein per 0.5 mL single-dose vial
Adult Dosing
- Primary immunization: 0.5 mL intramuscularly as a single dose for individuals at continued risk of exposure
Pediatric Dosing
- Infants and children (2 months through 11 months): 0.5 mL intramuscularly given as a two-dose primary series separated by at least 2 months
- Children aged 2 years and older, adolescents, and adults: 0.5 mL intramuscularly as a single dose
Indications
- Active immunization for the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A
Mechanism of Action
- Induces bactericidal antibodies against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A capsular polysaccharide, enhanced by conjugation to a carrier protein which converts a T-independent antigen into a T-dependent antigen for improved immunologic memory
Contraindications
- Severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any component of the vaccine or to diphtheria toxoid/CRM197 carrier protein after a previous dose
Adverse Reactions
- Injection site reactions (pain, erythema, swelling)
- Systemic reactions in adults/adolescents: headache, fatigue, malaise, myalgia, nausea
- Systemic reactions in infants/children: irritability, drowsiness, changes in eating habits, fever
Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressive therapies may reduce the immune response to the vaccine
- Can be administered concomitantly with other routine childhood vaccines at separate injection sites
