Forms & Strengths
- Suspension for intramuscular injection, multi-dose vials (historical/obsolete)
Adult Dosing
- Primary series: 1.0 mL IM initially, followed by 0.2 mL IM 1 to 3 months later
- Boosters: 0.2 mL IM every 6 months for individuals continued at high risk of exposure
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 1 year not established
- Children 1 to 10 years: Reduced dose volume proportional to age/weight per historical guidelines
- Children over 10 years: Adult dose volume scaled appropriately
Indications
- Active immunization against plague (Yersinia pestis) for laboratory personnel and military personnel at high risk of exposure (historically)
Mechanism of Action
- Stimulates humoral and cell-mediated immune responses against Yersinia pestis antigens, inducing neutralizing antibodies and protective immunity
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine or previous severe local/systemic reaction to plague vaccine
- Acute febrile illness or active severe infection
Adverse Reactions
- Local: Pain, erythema, induration, and edema at injection site
- Systemic: Fever, malaise, headache, myalgia, lymphadenopathy, nausea, and rarely anaphylaxis
Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressive therapies may diminish the immune response to the vaccine
- Other concurrently administered inactivated vaccines should be given at separate anatomical sites
