Forms & Strengths
- Suspension for injection: 30-50 million inactivated cells/mL
Adult Dosing
- Typical dose: 0.5 mL subcutaneously
- Primary vaccination: 2 doses 4-6 weeks apart
- Booster dose: 0.5 mL subcutaneously every 5-10 years
Pediatric Dosing
- Children over 1 year: same as adult dosing
Indications
- Prevention of epidemic typhus
- Prevention of murine typhus
Mechanism of Action
- Stimulates active immunity against Rickettsia prowazekii
- Induces production of specific antibodies
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to previous doses of typhus vaccine
- Acute febrile illness
- Pregnancy (except when benefits outweigh risks)
Adverse Reactions
- Local redness and swelling
- Fever
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Allergic reactions (rare)
Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressants: may reduce vaccine efficacy
- Other vaccines: administer separately, with a 1-week interval
