Forms & Strengths
- Suspension for intramuscular injection: 720 EL.U./0.5 mL (pediatric/adolescent)
- Suspension for intramuscular injection: 1440 EL.U./1.0 mL (adult)
Adult Dosing
- Primary immunization: 1440 EL.U. IM as a single dose
- Booster dose: 1440 EL.U. IM administered 6 to 12 months (or up to 18-36 months depending on brand) following the primary dose
Pediatric Dosing
- Ages 12 months through 18 years: 720 EL.U. IM as a single primary dose
- Booster dose: 720 EL.U. IM administered 6 to 12 months following the primary dose
Indications
- Active immunization against disease caused by hepatitis A virus (HAV)
- Recommended for individuals at increased risk of HAV infection, including travelers to endemic areas, men who have sex with men, illicit drug users, and persons with chronic liver disease or occupational risk
Mechanism of Action
- Induces the production of specific neutralizing antibodies against hepatitis A virus
- Confers active immunity and long-term protection against HAV infection
Contraindications
- History of severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any component of the vaccine or previous dose of hepatitis A vaccine
- Hypersensitivity to alum or residual components (such as formaldehyde or neomycin, depending on manufacturing process)
Adverse Reactions
- Injection site reactions: pain, tenderness, erythema, swelling
- Systemic reactions: headache, fatigue, malaise, low-grade fever, nausea, loss of appetite
Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressive therapies may reduce the immune response to the vaccine
- Can be administered concomitantly with other vaccines (e.g., typhoid, hepatitis B, yellow fever) using separate syringes and injection sites
