measles, live attenuated
J07BD01
Forms & Strengths
- Lyophilized powder for injection: ≥ 1,000 CCID50 per 0.5 mL dose after reconstitution
Adult Dosing
- 0.5 mL subcutaneously as a single dose
- Second dose of 0.5 mL administered at least 28 days later for high-risk individuals (e.g., healthcare workers, college students, international travelers)
Pediatric Dosing
- Primary immunization: 0.5 mL subcutaneously at 12 to 15 months of age
- Second dose: 0.5 mL subcutaneously at 4 to 6 years of age (prior to school entry)
Indications
- Active immunization against measles in individuals 12 months of age and older
- Post-exposure prophylaxis within 72 hours of measles exposure
Mechanism of Action
- Induces attenuated, non-pathogenic viral replication leading to humoral and cellular immune responses against measles virus
Contraindications
- History of severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any component of the vaccine, including gelatin or neomycin
- Primary or acquired immunodeficiency states
- Pregnancy
- Moderate to severe acute illness
Adverse Reactions
- Injection site reactions (pain, erythema, swelling)
- Fever (malaise or transient febrile rash 7-12 days post-vaccination)
- Transient lymphadenopathy
- Rare: anaphylaxis, thrombocytopenia, febrile seizures
Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressive therapies (chemotherapy, high-dose corticosteroids) may reduce vaccine efficacy and increase risk of disseminated infection
- Immune globulins and blood products can neutralize the live virus and inhibit adequate immune response; observe recommended intervals (3 to 11 months depending on dose)
