Forms & Strengths
- Lyophilized powder for suspension in single-dose vials containing >= 19,330 PFU after reconstitution
Adult Dosing
- 0.65 mL subcutaneously as a single dose for individuals aged 50 years and older
Pediatric Dosing
- Not indicated for pediatric use
Indications
- Prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in individuals aged 50 years and older
- Prevention of post-herpetic neuralgia in individuals aged 50 years and older
Mechanism of Action
- Live attenuated varicella-zoster virus vaccine that stimulates cell-mediated and humoral immunity against VZV, reducing the incidence and severity of shingles
Contraindications
- History of severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any component of the vaccine or gelatin
- Primary or acquired immunodeficiency states (e.g., leukemia, lymphomas, cellular immune deficiencies, AIDS)
- Immunosuppressive therapy including high-dose corticosteroids
- Active untreated tuberculosis
- Pregnancy
Adverse Reactions
- Injection site reactions (erythema, pain, swelling, pruritus)
- Headache
- Fever
- Asthenia
- Fatigue
Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressive therapies may decrease the efficacy and increase the risk of disseminated infection from live vaccines
- May be administered concurrently with inactivated vaccines at separate injection sites
- Defer vaccination for at least 5 months following administration of blood products containing antibodies, such as immune globulins
