Forms & Strengths
- Suspension for injection: 0.5ml single-dose vials, and prefilled syringes
- Each 0.5ml dose contains: 20mcg HPV 6, 40mcg HPV 11, 40mcg HPV 16, and 20mcg HPV 18
Adult Dosing
- 0.5ml dose IM at 0, 2, and 6 months for males and females 9-26 years
- For individuals with weakened immune systems, a 3-dose series may be given
- Catch-up vaccination recommended through age 26 for those not vaccinated when younger
Pediatric Dosing
- First dose at age 11-12 years, though can start as young as 9 years
- Typical series of 2 doses at 0 and 6-12 months for immunocompetent children
- For immunocompromised children, the series may be 3 doses at 0, 2, and 6 months
Indications
- Prevention of anal, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers and their precursors
- Prevention of genital warts (condyloma acuminata) caused by HPV types 6 and 11
- Prevention of oropharyngeal and other head and neck cancers
Mechanism of Action
- Stimulates the body to produce antibodies that help protect against HPV
- Induces neutralizing antibodies against the L1 capsid protein of HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18
- Does not provide therapeutic effect against established infection or disease
Contraindications
- Severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine or after a previous dose
- Moderate or severe acute illness, though mild acute illness is not a contraindication
Adverse Reactions
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Fatigue, headache, or muscle or joint pain
- Fever, nausea, dizziness, or fainting
Drug Interactions
- No known interactions with other vaccines
- May be administered concomitantly with other vaccines or medications
- No interaction with hormonal contraceptives
