balugrastim
L03AA15
Forms & Strengths
- Injectable solution in pre-filled syringes (investigational/historical context)
Adult Dosing
- Chemotherapy-induced neutropenia: typically administered as a single subcutaneous injection per chemotherapy cycle (long-acting recombinant human G-CSF fusion protein)
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not fully established in pediatric populations
Indications
- Reduction in the duration of neutropenia and the incidence of febrile neutropenia in patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy for non-myeloid malignancies
Mechanism of Action
- Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) fused to human serum albumin, binding to G-CSF receptors to stimulate the proliferation, differentiation, and neutrophil maturation, with prolonged half-life due to albumin fusion
Contraindications
- History of serious allergic reactions to human granulocyte colony-stimulating factors such as pegfilgrastim or filgrastim, or to human serum albumin
Adverse Reactions
- Bone pain
- Medullary bone pain
- Injection site reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Splenic rupture (rare)
Drug Interactions
- Lithium: may potentiate the release of neutrophils
- Cytotoxic chemotherapy: administer at least 24 hours before or after cytotoxic chemotherapy to avoid enhanced myelosuppression
