Forms & Strengths
- Ophthalmic Solution: 1% (Profenal)
Adult Dosing
- Ophthalmic (Cataract surgery): Instill 1 drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye at 3, 2, and 1 hour prior to surgery; or 1 drop every 4 hours while awake, beginning 1 day prior to surgery and continuing through the day of surgery and post-op period as needed.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established.
Indications
- Inhibition of intraoperative miosis during cataract surgery
Mechanism of Action
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by decreasing the activity of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), thereby preventing prostaglandin-induced miosis during surgery.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to suprofen or any component of the formulation
- Patients with epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis)
Adverse Reactions
- Transient stinging and burning upon instillation
- Iritis
- Chemosis
- Ocular discomfort
- Hyperemia
- Punctate keratitis
Drug Interactions
- Acetylcholine: Concomitant use with miotics may reduce the efficacy of the miotic agent.
- Carbachol: May decrease efficacy.
- Ophthalmic corticosteroids: Concomitant use may delay corneal healing and increase the risk of infection.
