Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: 200 mg
- Oral tablets: 300 mg
- Oral tablets: 400 mg
Adult Dosing
- Mild to moderate pain and inflammation: 600 mg to 900 mg daily administered in 2 to 3 divided doses
- Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis: Maximum recommended daily dose is 1200 mg divided into up to 3 doses
- Acute exacerbations: Up to 1200 mg daily in divided doses
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 18 years of age have not been established
- Use in children is generally off-label and requires specialist guidance based on racemic ibuprofen equivalent dosing
Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis
- Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis
- Management of acute mild-to-moderate pain such as dysmenorrhea, dental pain, and soft tissue injuries
Mechanism of Action
- Active S-enantiomer of ibuprofen
- Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), reducing the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins from arachidonic acid
- Exhibits analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to dexibuprofen, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs
- History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Active peptic ulcer disease or history of recurrent gastrointestinal ulceration or hemorrhage
- Severe heart failure, hepatic impairment, or renal impairment
- Third trimester of pregnancy due to risk of premature closure of the ductus arteriosus
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal: Dyspepsia, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, gastric ulceration, gastrointestinal bleeding
- Central nervous system: Headache, dizziness, fatigue
- Cardiovascular: Edema, hypertension, increased risk of thrombotic events with long-term high-dose use
- Renal: Renal impairment, fluid retention, electrolyte disturbances
- Hypersensitivity: Rash, pruritus, bronchospasm
Drug Interactions
- Other NSAIDs and salicylates: Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and adverse effects
- Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) and antiplatelet agents (e.g., aspirin): Increased risk of bleeding
- Antihypertensives, ACE inhibitors, and ARBs: Decreased antihypertensive efficacy and increased risk of renal impairment
- Diuretics: Reduced diuretic efficacy and increased nephrotoxicity risk
- Lithium and methotrexate: Decreased renal clearance leading to potential toxicity
