Forms & Strengths
- Injectable solution: 50 mg/mL, 250 mg/mL
- Topical cream/gel: 1% to 3%
Adult Dosing
- Intramuscular: 50 mg every 2 days, up to a total of 6-8 injections per course
- Intra-articular: 25 mg per joint weekly for up to 5 weeks
- Topical: Apply 2-3 times daily to affected area
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients
Indications
- Treatment of degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis
- Relief of joint pain, swelling, and reduced mobility
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits degradation of cartilage matrix by blocking destructive enzymes (e.g., hyaluronidase)
- Stimulates synthesis of hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans by synovial fibroblasts
- Exerts anti-inflammatory effects and improves synovial fluid viscosity
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to glycosaminoglycan polysulfate or animal-derived products
- Active bleeding disorders or concurrent anticoagulant therapy
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment
Adverse Reactions
- Local pain and irritation at injection site
- Transient increase in bleeding time
- Hypersensitivity reactions including rash and pruritus
- Gastrointestinal upset with oral formulations (if applicable)
Drug Interactions
- Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, heparin): Increased risk of hemorrhage due to heparinoid activity
- Antiplatelet agents (e.g., aspirin, NSAIDs): Enhanced bleeding risk
