Forms & Strengths
- Oral Tablet: 500 mg
- Oral Tablet: 750 mg
- Injectable Solution: 100 mg/mL in 10 mL vials
Adult Dosing
- Oral: 1.5 g q.i.d. for the first 48 to 72 hours, then maintenance of 4 g/day divided in 3 to 4 doses
- Intravenous/Intramuscular: 1 g to 3 g administered as a single dose, not exceeding 3 g/day for more than 3 consecutive days except in tetanus
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients below 16 years of age have not been established except in tetanus
- Tetanus (Off-label): 15 mg/kg to 40 mg/kg IV every 4 hours or continuous infusion up to 1800 mg/m2/day
Indications
- Adjunct to rest, physical therapy, and other measures for the relief of discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions
Mechanism of Action
- Central nervous system depressant acting primarily at the level of the spinal cord and subcortical areas to produce skeletal muscle relaxation by general sedation
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to methocarbamol or any component of the formulation
- Renal impairment (for injectable form due to polyethylene glycol vehicle)

- Nausea
- Pruritus
- Urticaria
- Fever
- Anaphylactic reaction
- Nystagmus
- Blurred vision
Drug Interactions
- Potentiation of central nervous system depressants including alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics, and appetite suppressants
- May potentiate the effects of anticholinergic drugs
- Can interfere with 5-HIAA urinary excretion screening tests causing false-positive results
