isobromindione
M04AB04
Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: 100 mg
- Oral tablets: 250 mg
Adult Dosing
- Initial: 250 mg to 500 mg daily in divided doses

Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients
Indications
- Management of chronic gout
- Hyperuricemia associated with gouty arthritis
Mechanism of Action
- Uricosuric agent that inhibits the reabsorption of uric acid in the proximal renal tubules
- Promotes renal excretion of uric acid, thereby lowering serum urate concentrations
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to isobromindione or pyrazolone derivatives
- Severe renal impairment or history of uric acid nephrolithiasis
- Active peptic ulcer disease
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal: nausea, dyspepsia, epigastric pain
- Dermatologic: rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Renal: precipitation of acute gouty arthritis, nephrolithiasis
- Hematologic: rare reports of leukopenia or agranulocytosis
Drug Interactions
- Salicylates (e.g., aspirin): antagonize the uricosuric effect of isobromindione
- Oral anticoagulants: may potentiate anticoagulant effect, increasing bleeding risk
- Diuretics (thiazides, loop diuretics): may elevate serum uric acid levels and counteract uricosuric efficacy
