Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablet: 150 mg
- Intravenous solution: 3 mg/3 mL
Adult Dosing
- Treatment/prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis (oral): 150 mg once monthly on the same date each month
- Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis (IV): 3 mg every 3 months administered by intravenous injection over 15 to 30 seconds
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established; use is not recommended
Indications
- Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
Mechanism of Action
- Potent nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate that binds to hydroxyapatite in bone, inhibiting osteoclast activity, reducing bone resorption, and decreasing bone turnover
Contraindications
- Abnormalities of the esophagus which delay esophageal emptying (e.g., stricture or achalasia)
- Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 60 minutes
- Hypocalcemia
- Known hypersensitivity to ibandronate or any component of the product
Adverse Reactions
- Dyspepsia
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Flu-like illness (common with IV administration)
- Rare: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), atypical femoral fractures
Drug Interactions
- Antacids, calcium supplements, and multivalent cations interfere with oral absorption; separate administration by at least 60 minutes
- NSAIDs or aspirin may increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse events
