trypsin, combinations
M09AB52
Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets/capsules containing trypsin combined with other proteolytic enzymes (e.g., chymotrypsin, papain, bromelain, rutoside)
Adult Dosing
- 1 to 2 tablets orally 3 to 4 times daily, typically taken between meals with water, depending on the specific combination product and clinical indication
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients; use is generally not recommended
Indications
- Adjunctive treatment of edema, inflammation, and soft tissue trauma resulting from surgery, injury, or inflammatory conditions
Mechanism of Action
- Proteolytic enzymes hydrolyze proteins and peptides involved in the inflammatory cascade, reducing capillary permeability, decreasing edema, and facilitating the removal of inflammatory exudates
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to trypsin or any component of the combination product
- Severe congenital or acquired blood coagulation disorders (e.g., hemophilia)
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment
- Patients receiving concurrent anticoagulant therapy
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia)
- Allergic reactions (rash, pruritus, urticaria)
- Increased risk of bleeding or hematoma formation due to fibrinolytic activity
Drug Interactions
- Anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents (increased risk of bleeding)
- Certain antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines, amoxicillin), as proteolytic enzymes may alter their absorption or tissue penetration
