xenon
N01AX15
Forms & Strengths
- inhalation gas, 50% and 70% mixtures with oxygen
- single-use cylinders for anesthesia
Adult Dosing
- inhalation: 50-70% inspired concentration for general anesthesia induction and maintenance
- titrate to effect based on clinical response
Pediatric Dosing
- not established
- limited data available, consult specialty references
Indications
- general anesthesia for surgical procedures
- neurosurgery requiring high cerebral oxygenation
Mechanism of Action
- inert gas with weak anesthetic properties, NMDA receptor antagonist
- expands cerebral blood flow, decreases cerebral metabolic rate
Contraindications
- pulmonary veno-occlusive disease
- circulatory depression, hypotension
Adverse Reactions
- respiratory: increased pulmonary artery pressure
- cardiovascular: decreased cardiac output, hypertension
- nervous system: seizures, awareness during anesthesia
Drug Interactions
- avoid use with other anesthetics that sensitize the myocardium to catecholamines
- potential interaction with lithium, causing increased neurotoxicity risk
Curated Content: Needs Vetting Before Put to Clinical Use
