Adult Dosing
- Typical dose: 5-20 mg IV, may repeat as needed
Indications
- Local anesthesia
- Diagnostic procedures
Mechanism of Action
- Blocks sodium channels on nerve fibers, preventing depolarization
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metabutethamine or amide local anesthetics
- Infection or inflammation at injection site
Adverse Reactions
- Local pain or inflammation
- Allergic reactions
- CNS toxicity (high doses)
- Cardiovascular effects (high doses)
Drug Interactions
- Sulfonamides may enhance toxicity
- MAOIs may increase risk of serotonin syndrome
