Forms & Strengths
- Tablet: 500mg, 750mg, 1000mg
- Capsule: 500mg
- Liquid: 500mg/5mL
Adult Dosing
- Osteoarthritis: 1000-1500mg tid-qid
- Rheumatoid arthritis: 1000-2000mg tid-qid
- Pain relief: 500-1000mg q4-6h
Pediatric Dosing
- Not recommended for children under 16 years of age due to risk of Reye's syndrome
Indications
- Relief of mild to moderate pain
- Inflammation and swelling associated with osteoarthritis
- Inflammation and swelling associated with rheumatoid arthritis
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis through COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition
- Non-selective COX inhibitor
- Magnesium component contributes to muscle relaxation
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to salicylates or magnesium
- Active peptic ulcer disease
- Pregnancy, especially in third trimester
- Children under 16 years with viral infections due to risk of Reye's syndrome
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Tinnitus
- Ringing in ears
Drug Interactions
- Anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin): increased bleeding risk
- Methotrexate: increased toxicity
- Probenecid: decreased salicylate clearance
- Corticosteroids: increased risk of gastrointestinal ulcers
