Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: 5 mg
- Oral tablets: 10 mg
Adult Dosing
- Migraine prophylaxis: 5 to 10 mg orally once daily
- Tension headache: 5 mg orally up to twice daily as needed
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established
Indications
- Prophylaxis of vascular headaches
- Treatment of severe migraine attacks
Mechanism of Action
- Synthetic progestin derivative with central nervous system activity
- Modulates serotonin and neurotransmitter pathways involved in vascular headache pathophysiology
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to flumedroxone
- Known or suspected hormone-dependent malignancies
- Active thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
Adverse Reactions
- Drowsiness
- Weight gain
- Nausea
- Menstrual irregularities
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
Drug Interactions
- CYP3A4 inducers may decrease plasma concentrations of flumedroxone
- CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase systemic exposure and adverse effects
- Anticoagulants may have altered efficacy when co-administered with progestins
