Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: 50 mg
- Oral tablets: 100 mg
- Oral tablets: 200 mg
Adult Dosing
- Acute treatment of migraine with or without aura: 50 mg, 100 mg, or 200 mg orally as a single dose.
- Maximum dose: 1 dose (up to 200 mg) in a 24-hour period.
- Safety of treating more than 4 migraines in a 30-day period has not been established.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.
Indications
- Acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults.
Mechanism of Action
- Selective serotonin 5-HT1F receptor agonist.
- Does not cause vasoconstriction or coronary artery constriction.
- Exerts anti-migraine effect via inhibition of pro-inflammatory neuropeptide release and pain pathways in the trigeminal system.
Adverse Reactions
- Dizziness
- Somnolence
- Fatigue
- Paresthesia
- Nausea and vomiting
- Muscle weakness
- Vertigo
Drug Interactions
- Central nervous system (CNS) depressants (e.g., alcohol, opioids): May cause additive sedation and impairment.
- Serotonergic drugs: Potential risk of serotonin syndrome when combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, or MAOIs.
- Drugs that lower heart rate (e.g., beta-blockers): May enhance bradycardia risk.
