Forms & Strengths
- tablet: 5mg, 10mg
- solution for injection: 5mg/mL, 10mg/mL
- suppository: 5mg, 10mg
Adult Dosing
- 30-60mg/day in divided doses for moderate pain
- 60-120mg/day in divided doses for severe pain
- maximum dose: 120mg/day
Pediatric Dosing
- 0.5-1mg/kg every 4-6 hours for moderate pain
- 1-2mg/kg every 4-6 hours for severe pain
- not recommended for children under 6 months
Indications
- management of moderate to severe pain
- treatment of chronic pain
- pain relief in cancer patients
Mechanism of Action
- selective agonist of mu-opioid receptors
- inhibits release of substance P
- activates G-protein coupled receptors
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to oxycodone or other opioids
- respiratory depression
- acute bronchial asthma
- paralytic ileus
Adverse Reactions
- nausea and vomiting
- constipation
- drowsiness
- respiratory depression
- dependency and addiction
Drug Interactions
- increased sedation with CNS depressants
- increased risk of constipation with anticholinergics
- decreased efficacy with opioid antagonists
- increased risk of respiratory depression with benzodiazepines
