Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 5mg
- Injectable: 5mg/mL
- Syrup: 5mg/5mL
Adult Dosing
- Initial dose: 2.5mg orally tid
- Maintenance dose: 5-10mg orally tid
- Maximum dose: 30mg/day
Pediatric Dosing
- Children over 12 years: initial dose 2.5mg orally tid
- Not recommended for children under 12 years
Indications
- Treatment of parkinsonism
- Treatment of extrapyramidal disorders caused by antipsychotics
- Adjunct in treatment of motor function disorders
Mechanism of Action
- Blocks acetylcholine receptors in CNS
- Anticholinergic and antihistaminic effects
Contraindications
- Gastrointestinal obstruction
- Toxic megacolon
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Prostatic hypertrophy
- Myasthenia gravis
Adverse Reactions
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Blurred vision
- Constipation
- Urinary retention
Drug Interactions
- Enhances effects of antihistamines
- Interacts with anticholinergic agents
- Interferes with levodopa efficacy
- Prolongs neuromuscular blockade with succinylcholine
