Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 0.5mg
- Injectable: 0.5mg/mL
Adult Dosing
- Parkinsonism: 0.5mg orally once or twice daily
- Drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions: 0.5mg IM or IV, repeated as needed
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in children under 12 years
- Use with caution in children 12 years and older, due to limited data
Indications
- Treatment of parkinsonism
- Treatment of drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions
Mechanism of Action
- Anticholinergic activity, blocks acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors in the CNS
- Relieves symptoms of parkinsonism by reducing muscle rigidity and tremors
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to etybenzatropine or other anticholinergic agents
- Narrow-angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, or other conditions where anticholinergics are contraindicated
Adverse Reactions
- Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention
- Confusion, hallucinations, dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting
Drug Interactions
- May increase anticholinergic effects when used with other anticholinergics
- May decrease efficacy of phenothiazines and other antipsychotics
- Concomitant use with MAOIs may increase risk of adverse reactions
