Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: 200 mg
- Oral tablets: 400 mg
Adult Dosing
- Anxiety: 400 mg orally 3 to 4 times daily
- Maximum daily dose: 2400 mg/day
Pediatric Dosing
- Children 6 to 12 years (Anxiety): 100 to 200 mg orally 2 to 3 times daily
- Safety and efficacy not established in children under 6 years
Indications
- Management of anxiety disorders
- Short-term relief of anxiety symptoms
Mechanism of Action
- Acts at multiple sites in the central nervous system, including the thalamus and limbic system
- Interacts with GABA-A receptor complexes, producing sedative and anxiolytic effects similar to barbiturates
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to meprobamate or carisoprodol
- Acute intermittent porphyria
Adverse Reactions
- Drowsiness, ataxia, dizziness
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Hypotension, syncope
- Paradoxical excitement, euphoria
- Physical and psychological dependence with chronic use
Drug Interactions
- Central nervous system depressants (alcohol, opioids, sedatives) result in additive sedation and respiratory depression
- CYP3A4 inducers or inhibitors may alter metabolism
- Tricyclic antidepressants may increase risk of seizures or profound sedation
