Forms & Strengths
- Topical cream 3%
- Topical ointment 3%
Adult Dosing
- Apply thin layer to affected skin 2 to 3 times daily
- Limit treatment duration to 1 to 2 weeks to prevent systemic absorption and toxicity
Pediatric Dosing
- Children >2 years: Apply thin layer to affected skin 2 to 3 times daily
- Use with caution and limit duration due to increased skin surface-area-to-mass ratio and absorption risk
Indications
- Treatment of superficial fungal skin infections (tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis)
- Treatment of infected eczema and impetiginized dermatitis
Mechanism of Action
- Halogenated hydroxyquinoline with broad-spectrum antifungal, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal activity
- Chelates trace metals essential for microbial growth and enzyme function
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clioquinol, iodine, or hydroxyquinolines
- Tuberculosis, vaccinia, varicella, and other viral skin lesions
- Open wounds or denuded skin due to risk of systemic toxicity
Adverse Reactions
- Local skin irritation, burning, or pruritus
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Staining of skin, hair, and clothing (yellowish discoloration)
Drug Interactions
- May interfere with thyroid function tests due to elevated iodine absorption
- Avoid concurrent use of other topical preparations on the same skin area to prevent interaction
