Forms & Strengths
- Topical ointment: 3%
- Topical cream: 3%
- Vaginal tablets: 200 mg
Adult Dosing
- Topical: Apply thinly to affected skin areas 2 to 3 times daily
- Vaginal: Insert 1 tablet vaginally daily for 6 to 12 days
Pediatric Dosing
- Topical (children >2 years): Apply thinly to affected areas 1 to 2 times daily under medical supervision
- Vaginal: Not recommended for pediatric patients
Indications
- Treatment of superficial fungal and bacterial skin infections
- Treatment of vaginitis caused by fungi, bacteria, or mixed infections
Mechanism of Action
- Halogenated 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative with antibacterial, antifungal, and antiprotozoal properties
- Chelates trace metal ions essential for microbial enzyme function, disrupting cellular metabolism
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to chlorquinaldol or other hydroxyquinolines
- History of iodine hypersensitivity or intolerance
- Application to extensive or deep wounds
- First trimester of pregnancy (vaginal formulations)
Adverse Reactions
- Local skin irritation, burning, or pruritus
- Contact dermatitis or allergic skin reactions
- Vaginal irritation or burning sensation upon insertion
Drug Interactions
- Incompatible with topical preparations containing heavy metals or iodine
- May interfere with thyroid function tests due to iodine content if absorbed systemically
