Adult Dosing

Apply topically to affected area once daily or several times daily as needed
May be used with or without a sterile bandage

Pediatric Dosing

Safety and efficacy in neonates and infants not well established; use with caution
Apply topically to affected area once daily or several times daily as directed

Indications

Adjuvant therapy for second- and third-degree burns when bacterial resistance to other agents is a problem
Treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the skin
Prevention of infection in skin grafts

Mechanism of Action

Broad-spectrum topical antibacterial agent
Interferes with bacterial carbohydrate metabolism by inhibiting bacterial enzymes
Active against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms commonly found in skin infections

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to nitrofural or nitrofurazone derivatives
Not for use in the eyes or internal body cavities

Adverse Reactions

Contact dermatitis
Pruritus
Local edema
Rash
Superinfection with resistant organisms or fungi

Drug Interactions

No significant systemic drug interactions reported due to minimal percutaneous absorption
Avoid concurrent use of other topical antimicrobial agents on the same site to prevent antagonism or increased irritation
