Vaginal tablets 250 mg
Compound pessaries
Topical powder

Adult Dosing

Trichomoniasis vaginalis: 1 vaginal tablet (250 mg) inserted deeply into the vagina daily for 7 to 14 days
Amoebiasis: Historically 250 mg orally 2-3 times daily (rarely used due to toxicity)

Pediatric Dosing

Not recommended for pediatric use due to lack of safety data and risk of systemic arsenic toxicity

Indications

Treatment of Trichomonas vaginalis vaginitis
Historically used for intestinal and hepatic amebiasis and congenital syphilis

Mechanism of Action

Pentavalent arsenical compound that releases active arsenic species in vivo
Exerts protozoicidal and anti-infective effects by binding to sulfhydryl groups of parasite enzymes

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to arsenic or acetarsol
Severe hepatic impairment
Severe renal impairment
Optic neuritis or active eye disease

Adverse Reactions

Local irritation, burning, or pruritus at the application site
Systemic arsenic toxicity with prolonged use or absorption (gastrointestinal upset, peripheral neuropathy, optic damage)
Hypersensitivity skin reactions and rashes
Hepatotoxicity

Drug Interactions

Concomitant use with other nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic drugs increases the risk of organ damage
Other arsenic-containing medications or heavy metal antagonists (increased toxicity)
