Adult Dosing
- Schistosoma mansoni: 15 mg/kg orally twice daily for 1 day, or 30 mg/kg as a single dose in certain regions
Pediatric Dosing
- Children > 6 years: 20 mg/kg orally in two divided doses of 10 mg/kg given 2-8 hours apart
- Infants and young children: 10 mg/kg orally twice daily for 1 day
Indications
- Treatment of all forms of schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni
Mechanism of Action
- Schistosomicide that acts selectively against Schistosoma mansoni, causing worm contraction, paralysis, and shift from the mesenteric veins to the liver
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to oxamniquine
- Pregnancy (relative contraindication due to potential embryotoxicity)
Adverse Reactions
- Dizziness, drowsiness, and headache (very common)
- Transient abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting
- Urticaria and rash
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Rarely, epileptiform convulsions (usually within hours of administration)
Drug Interactions
- CNS depressants: May potentiate drowsiness and dizziness
- Anticonvulsants: May lower seizure threshold, potentially antagonizing seizure control
